Champions Cup

   Two Professionals
Amateur Golf
 Jack Burke Jr.    Jimmy Demaret

When Jack Burke and the late Jimmy Demaret opened Champions Golf Club in 1957,
they dedicated themselves to keeping an active amateur golf program in the Houston area.

Four years later, they conceived the Champions Cup Invitational, four rounds of two-man,
best ball stroke competition to be played by the country's outstanding amateur golfers.
Participation would be by invitation and only to golfers with three handicaps or lower.
Both members of the team must be over twenty-five (25) years of age and must also be from accredited USGA golf clubs.
Contestants must walk during the tournament.

Champions is a club solely devoted to golf, with an unusual number of low handicappers among its membership.
The club has 400+ members with single digit handicaps and 150+ of those are five or below.

Since opening it's courses in 1957, Champions has been proud to host many national events.  They include:
1967 Ryder Cup
1969 U.S. Open
1966,1967,1968,1970,1971 Champions International
1990 Nabisco Championship
1993 U.S. Amateur
1998, 2017 U.S. Women's Mid Amateur
1997,1999,2001,2003 PGA Tour Championship
Future Tournaments - U.S. Women's Open Championship - June 1-7, 2020
The Champions Invitational 2020 will be another great amateur event!

Housing Options (Private Housing & Hotel Recommendations):

      Dear Champions Cup Competitor:
We are pleased to announce the following accommodation options that we have established for the 2020 Champions Cup competitors.

      1. Stay with a Champions Golf Club Member who generously open their homes to competitors
      2. Arranging your own accommodations (Hotels or other)

      1. Champions members, who live close to Champions, open up their homes, at no charge, to competitors in the 2020 Cup to stay with them during the tournament. This is an opportunity for you to enjoy the local Champions area and take in the Southern hospitality while making new friends with Champions members. The members will provide you with appropriate sleeping accommodations throughout your stay in Houston. If you are interested in this accommodation venue, please advise me. Housing will be available starting Tuesday, March 31 through Saturday, April 4th.

      2. If you choose to arrange your own housing by staying with friends and family, or a hotel, it is important to know that we no longer designate a "host hotel” due to the large number of participants staying with Champions members. Hotels that are close to Champions that we can recommend are as follows :
      • Best Western Premier–Ashton Suites: 7495 W Greens Road, Houston, TX, 77064;
Call to receive a preferred rate of $90 per night + tax, (discount code: GOLF), (281) 970-9696

  • Volunteer Information
    • 2020 Champions Cup Invitational - Cart Driver Volunteers

The 2019 Champions Cup Invitational is scheduled for April 2nd-5th.  We are excited about the 2020 event and as in the past we are seeking volunteers to drive carts for the players. Member involvement is critical to the success of our tournament.

      1. Champions members are involved in the tournament beyond committee duties, and represent to the players on a personal level, the image of the Club.

      2. Players from across the country are exposed to our members. Friendships are made. It has not been uncommon for the same member to volunteer to drive for the same team year after year.

      3. The ability to allow all players to walk sets the tournament apart from all other amateur events except USGA National events. It is a unique feature of the Champions Cup.

Continuing efforts are being made to update the tournament with new ideas and with the use of the Internet, improved communications. There is now a Champions Invitational link off of the Champions Golf Club website. This website will be the primary communication point for all activities involved with the tournament, including parings, tee times, daily results, and Cart Driver Assignments.

At this time we are asking for Cart Driver Volunteers to work during the tournament.
The Cart Drivers basic responsibilities are to drive the cart for the Two-Man Team, and are not expected to be a caddie or provide advice, such as reading putts. However, you can assist your players only as you feel comfortable, such as cleaning clubs and balls, holding pens or raking bunkers.

Drivers each day will be provided with the breakfast buffet, a sandwich lunch ticket, and beverages after the round. Also, drivers and their spouses are invited to the Saturday night Buffet with Entertainment and the Sunday afternoon Awards Presentation Reception.

While we would hope that the drivers could commit for all four days, it may not be possible, so partial days would also be appreciated.

You can sign up to volunteer at the Pro Shop, or by calling or emailing Nathan Billiot: [email protected] or phone 713-410-1102.

      Please provided the following information:

      • Name

      • Contact Phone No.

      • Email address

      • Volunteer days – All, or Day(s) Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Thanks again for your consideration to volunteer for this 2020 event.

      Nathan Billiot
      Volunteer Cart Driver Coordinator
